Why can't I get a refund after the deadline?

Our refund policy is linked to drop/add deadlines. After several weeks, another student cannot take your place in a class. After several weeks, another student cannot purchase this book, and we may have had to order one to replace the one in your possession.

Why can't I get a refund if I have written in the book? Used the pin code? Lost a component?

The bookstore can neither return the book to the publisher, nor sell it to another student.

I just bought the book yesterday, why can't I return it?

You can, if you purchased the book during the normal drop/add period. If you purchased your book after this time, you purchased it as a non-returnable item. The bookstore starts inventory and returns shortly after the start of the semester in order to make way for next semester's books. Returning after the deadline means that we may be unable to return the book to the publisher.

I only need to return a part of the package. Why can't I get a partial refund?

The package was ordered as a set by your professor, and purchased from the publisher in that form. We cannot return only a portion, so we cannot accept partial returns from you either.

I did not know what the returns policy was. Why can't I return the books?

The returns policy is clearly posted at all registers, on our web site, in the textbook area, and at that bottom of all receipts. We have made every reasonable effort to notify all of our customers as to the deadlines.

I dropped the class, and do not need the book anymore. Why can't I return it?

I only come to campus occasionally. It was not convenient for me to return the book before now.

We allow returns for the first several weeks of class, and for two weeks from the date of purchase. As classes meet at least once per week, this allows people several opportunities to return any unneeded textbooks.

I didn't know until after the returns period was over that I would not need the book.

We list books as required or optional as directed by NYU faculty. You should always check your syllabus to see how extensively the book will actually be used in class. Our returns period gives ample time for this to be done.

I bought the wrong book. Why can't I return it?

Within the returns period, you will receive a full refund. This provides ample opportunity for you to check with your professor, read the syllabus, and make sure that you have the correct course materials.

I dropped/withdrew from the class. Why can't I get a refund?

My professor said that it was ok to return the book, why wasn't my return accepted by the bookstore?

Occasionally there are circumstances where we are able to extend the returns period for an entire class. This is usually because there was a curriculum change; a professor was unable to finish teaching the class, or some other extraordinary circumstance. In such cases, we can accept returns for two weeks after the announcement. If you miss the extended returns period, we will be unable to accept your book back.
